Just finished reading the book, The New Assistive Tech - Make Learning Awesome for All!. You know you have a book that hits home when the book is well marked up.
Throughout the book, I found myself highlighting and making reference marks on how I can better incorporate assistive technology, or use the Christopher Bugaj's comments to support the professional development sessions I provide for staff.
The first part of the book lays out the why of assistive technology. This is a must read for all educators. Too often I find myself creating work that focus on a certain subset of students. However, after going through the first half of The New Assistive Tech, I was constantly referencing past assignments and thinking how I could change the assignment so that ALL students could use it. Unfortunately I cannot go back and redo those classes, but I can definitely make changes going forward.
The second half of the book really focused on how to properly write an IEP and the language you should use. I book laid key terms to avoid and words for all to use. While I do not write IEPs, I have been on teams and this book is a fantastic guide for any IEP team.
Available from the ISTE website, direct link, The New Assistive Tech by Christopher Bugaj is an easy read that will impact all educators, just as it will impact all students.
